Pirates

I remember a couple years ago reading a blog of a sailor. I fellow who was sailing to world on his boat all by himself for a couple of years. He wrote about outrunning Dhows of the horn of Africa. Terrifying stuff, to be all alone out there relying on the wind and your radio to call for help which may or may not be around.

An interesting development.

Private security firms are watching. I wonder what the info costs...

Not as much as you'd imagine.

That said, IMHO, it's pretty worthless info. The pirates might move, not many organizations have their own naval assault crews, and even if they did, it's doubtful the pirates will hand the ship over without a nasty, nasty fight.

hrm....

Your right, but it could at least provide logistics as far as where land bases are located, number of crew etc...

Or just to let the owners know where exactly their property is.

I keep saying Q-Ships, and everybody keeps thinking I'm saying Q-Tips.

Q-Containers would really be the way to go. Ends open up, gantry slides out with a dual .50 mount. Ooooo, my pants are tight all of the sudden.

Didn't the Brits do that to the Germans in like '39 or '40. German u boats were surfacing to allow Brit crews to evacuate then the Royal Navy hid some cannon on a merchant and took out a uboat or two?

I like the US media's take on that story:

"SEALs rescued beautiful, photogenic white blonde American girl with fuck-me eyes from he dastardly clutches of some darkie Muslims; some crusty piece of Eurotrash also recovered, but only because he happened to be there as well."

Bunch of Iranian sailors last week too. Yeah, that pic is to die for, which is one reason it has been getting so much media, but anti-pirate work is really getting the Navy's attention a lot more these days than anti-terror, despite the killing of OBL. And if anybody deserved a full on SEAL rescue mission it is the aid worker that has spent five years in Africa. Next up they are retrofitting an old helicopter carrier that was heading for mothballs as a floating commando 'mother-ship'. Sounds like a big target to me, but that's what they always said about our carrier fleet and nobody has hit one of those yet. Hostage rescues are good things.

Tampa was invaded this weekend as well, as the Gasparilla invasion and day parade took place.

I didn't go and we missed the Kids parade the week before as well.

Aye. And you're lucky you've got them. Our government still holds to the literal interpretation of "We don't negotiate with terrorists" and that's exactly what they do: don't negotiate, and do nothing else. Nigel Brennan is still pissed.

Yeah, the...heh..."Ponce". The carrier fleet is a target most for subs, and even nations which diesel electrics who HATE YER FREEDOMS have had a crack at them yet. The Ponce would be up against dinghies and retrofitted supertankers, and if a ship full of armed sailors and Penguin missiles can't handle those, well, you might as well get out of the war business.

And on a wider note, if Obama and Panetta can pull off this paring down of the US forces, then it can only be a good thing. Granted, there's gonna be a helluva lot of pushback from the Big Shiny Toy-types in the Pentagon, as what happened in the UK: sacrificing shit that actually works and they need (like more Chinooks in Afghanistan) so the admirals can have a big carrier that's armed with aircraft that are yet to actually fly successfully and that they can only run for a few years before mothballing it. And doesn't exactly do much for counter-insurgency work.

Of course, now Mitt wants to build a defence so huge "no one will dare attack America", because that worked so well in 2001. That's Titanic-sized hubris.

I was hoping David Kilcullen would rush the podium and backhand Romney, screaming "FUCKIN' WAKE UP TO YOURSELF!"

I don't want one, much less multiples. And it isn't as if they get to have sex with more than one at the same time so what is the point?

It just sounds like an expensive, naggy Hell.

If any of these idiots actually think they can unseat Obama they're smoking some pretty fine stuff, is all I'm saying. I'd be surpised if the DCCC isn't funneling money to Newt just to create even more divisions among the GOP. The 2012 GOP look like the 2004 Dems, with a big helping of ignorance and hatred on the side. Where fractured Dems act like a herd of indecisive gazelle set upon by a pride of lions a fractured GOP is more like a group of retarded sharks, swimming in circles and randomly eating chunks of one another while the school of tuna swims away.

I have no wife, but if I did, would it matter? Not like she'd have a choice...

You don't think there are a lot of polygamous mormen men out there that are made to suffer for it?

That's why every US male will be issued with an extra-heavy, hardcover version of The Book of Mormon, and a practice wife on which to practice with it.

See, that's why I think the Mormon's would hit it off with the Taliban.

"Dude, does your first wife get pissed when you marry a new 18-year old every five years?"

"Allah be praised, she DOES! Are Mormon first wives crazy old nags about that too?"

"You betcha, not sure why they think we'd still want the old mare when the young philly is ready to go. Every morning I get the stink eye from her over our huge dining table as she feeds my 14 kids."

"I know, right, with the angry eyes? Sometimes I wish I could force her to wear that burqa in the house too so I can eat my fucking corn flakes in peace before I go out to beat women for driving but NOOOOO!"

So, the FBI has requested the Kiwi police hold Kim Dotcom in custody in case re-offends.

What, in case he codes some HTML? Oh, noes, bust out the SWAT team!
