It may be oil based, but its not fucking oil. It acts exactly like oil-based drilling mud, what we call "inverted" mud. Over time, the oil would separate out and the clays and such would sink, but there have been improvements in inverted mud over the years to delay this process for quite some time.

I saw another recent picture of a large boat going through it. It ain't crude oil.
