BEEEEAAK!

Locals are going nuts over these guys hunting that octopus. Linus Torvalds just posted a petition to ban this sort of hunting in that specific spot. I like octopuses, but... I am a bit hesitant to do the kneejerk liberal thing with regard to hunting. I am not, after all, a vegetarian. Personally, seems like hunting your food is more ethical than having a factory farmed animal manufactured and slaughtered.

Though, I guess this one was protecting her eggs. And, generally it's bad form to hunt mothers.

And, yeah, we do value some animals more than others. Personally, I will unceremoniously will swat a mosquito to death, but could not imagine killing an octopus or cat, much less another human.
To me, octopus seem to have a certain sagacious expression on their "faces" (like how dolphins seems to have a happy, carefree expression):

I blame the narrow, horizontal pupils. It makes it look as if they are calmly observing the world around them, as if they are full of discernment.

This was not 'hunting'. It was like killing an animal already at the zoo. Literally shooting fish in a barrel. The kid is a dick.

Most of the time hunting is like that - the product of an arms race that went heavily one sided, I'm afraid.

I assume it was a giant octopus, which happens to be on the ICUN redlist for endangered species? If so, the kid should be fined and have his license revoked. If there is something like a license required to hunt the coast line, which I somehow doubt. Either way, he needs to learn the lesson. No need for a public pillory, besides there will never be enough pillories for all the idiots in the world.

But I very much agree with xen0phile, cheap meat is sick. Nothing wrong with farming animals, but show them respect and treat them well.
