Hacking the Gibson, in London!

What he said. At least one episode written my Neil Gaiman, IIRC - and the episode with Scott Adams was priceless. I killed an inkjet printer by printing out a hard copy of the entire Lurker's Guide, and one of these days I shall own the "universe" box set that they brought out...

Ho HOOOO! But the world has changed and, quite possibly, so have my plans. In case you haven't been playing the home game, GTA 4 has been DELAYED for 6 months. This means that there is an EXCELLENT chance that I will fly down to London to meet everyone in one place. In means giving up my Edinburgh book ticket, of course (any takers?) but life is complicated, yes?

Kitsune. Edinburgh on Monday - w/Remote's ticket.

edinburgh is sold out.
so i am selling my ticket to kitsune so that she can make it, and i'll come down to london earlier.
with crash's deadline being put back looks like he will come as well. so his edinburgh ticket is up for grabs.

i would say, this puts crash and i available for meeting mirrorgirl for lunch. which sounds cool. and if there is a plan to meet fuldog arriving monday we'll be up for that as well.

i have a hotel booked for my original period of time. but i know it is fully booked for the weekend. so need to find somewhere else. and still need to book transport.

chaos!

Earlier in this thread I rashly promised some sort of CyberPunk guide to central London, for the benefit of out of town visitors, who are swarming to the William Gibson book promotion events on the 28th and 29th of this month.

It is taking a bit longer than I anticipated, but it will be online Real Soon Now (as Jerry Pournelle used to write in Byte magazine).

I intend to just provide location details and some amateur snapshop images for orientation purposes, of a few of the the places which are of interest to me, and which are directly or indirectly relevant to William Gibson and some other cyberpunk authors writings. Hopefully these may be worth a visit or a photo, if you are exploring the relevant areas.

Ground Zero - the book signing venues -
the TUC conference centre and the Forbidden Planet Megastore

Charing Cross Road - books shops and internet cafes

Shaftesbury Avenue

Seven Dials / Covent Garden - William Gibson writing location references

Centre Point - landmark skyscraper for orientation; some dangerous places to avoid at night on your own; possible meetup drinking venue The Intrepid Fox public house

China Town - possible meetup restaurant The New Laughing Buddha

Tottenham Court Road - electronic gadgets and internet cafes

Blue Plaques - commemorating scientists, inventors and cryptographers e.g. William Gibson mentioned one in a recent interview, which was already on the list, where the first television pictures were transmitted

Camden Town - Pattern Recognition land

Museums and Exhibitions

Fictional Spook and Spy film, tv and book locations in central London

Real Spooks and Spies - embassies, intelligence agency HQs

Polonium-210 contamination locations - safe enough now

Any suggestions are welcome, especially regarding Clubs etc.
If anyone wants to come to New Laughing Buddha after Blackwells event on the Tuesday evening, please make sure that Psychophant knows and that you are on the list. We need to know more exact numbers, since they have either a room that takes ~24 or one that takes more.
maybe we need to split it into a list of definites and possibles. and push the possibles for answers. last i heard sentinel and arkan were on holiday. but i would guess we count them in.

the likes Auteur Gal i don't think has been back on board since she said she would be there. so its difficult to count her in on anything.

sadly, crash doesn't think he will make london after all. his deadline has been put back, but he is still up against it till october. so i guess he is still going to edinburgh, not london, and will post if its any different.

Yeah sure. I am always up for something new

I/We are on Psychophant list. Unless there is another list I don't know about.

Same for me/us.
Will be at Blackwell's and willing to go to New Laughing Buddha afterwards.
File us in the definites list.
could always meet in the science museum, have some lunch and check out the difference engines. (and klein bottles, which are on same floor, and pretty cool, and referenced in a russell hoban novel)(speaking of which i need to make sure i see the lions in british museum this time!)
how are we doing on confirming numbers for laughing buddha?

i booked my train last night. £28 down, £17 back up. saturday to saturday.

i have a hotel from tuesday to saturday.
reckon i have a hotel close enough to that one to save me hassle when it comes to tuesday.
but i'll confirm that tonight.
Somewhat off topic, but I thought it might be fun to have some t-shirts made especially for the London Meat (all non-profit, of course). Someone a lot smarter than me suggested I put some mugs and mouse pads in the store, as well, so I did.

Check here for the 'white version'

and here for a dark version.

(I think I'll order a mug for The Man as a gift.)

We are still missing the NLB confirmations of Sentinel (on holidays), ArkanGL (both will come unless dining with Gibson, I am sure), Memetic Engineer (come on, you were on this page), Hasa (I would count him in, on principle), Yer Andreas (come on, say something else).

Now I know what I will be wearing at Forbidden Planet, though probably not at Blackwell. Thanks Gringo.

though of course your t-shirt looks cool, and not something i'd have thought of.

You mean something like this, Remote?

Don't know if that picture could be used for a t-shirt, though. Too small, probably.

I like your KGB style logo idea, though. I'll see if I can come up with something.

Yep. And it wouldn't harm asking, a local copy shop might make a better deal if you are going to order 20 of them.

Not here I am afraid. Frown I can ask around though.

Would know exactly the right guy for it in Austria, but will not get there before London. Could ask a friend to check it out for me ... and yes, will need the design first. (And it would still need to be shipped to London.)

true. though i guess there is always the option of using the image, with the text below it.

though it all complicates matters anyway if we are up against a clock for people actually getting hold of them.

speaking of which. the shirt city one doesn't show up for me when i click the link. the dark one shows ok, and i think its great in red, because i'm funny like that Smile
Okay, just so you know, I will buy a shirt if there is an official bulk order.

But I must add that everything takes FOREVER to get Korea so if someone orders something for me, I'll gladly pay them back. Or if I could get something sent to someone in a country with a better postal system, that would be nice.

Seriously, everything takes freaking forever to get here. Almost 1 month for an "I Like Fuldog" shirt. I'd never get another shirt on time before the meat.....
