How does one cultivate a haircut? I honestly don't know what looks good on me, so I sorta want to just defer to the barber. I dunno.
(Well, the thing is I haven't been to a barber for years now. Cost-saving measure. I just give myself a buzz cut once every few months).

That's exactly what I've been doing. Let the barber do his thing. IF you don't like the result, try a different shop next time.
They would all, in my experience, ask basically "how do you want it cut?"
I'm all like
I guess... erm... I could have just explicitly told them, "I'm not sure--you can cut it how you think looks best".
Yes, they always ask that.
To which I just reply: short.
It usually works.
"How do you want your hair cut?"
